A Little Wordy

If you're anything like me, puzzle solving is easily your favorite game mechanic. I love knowing that there's a secret I need to crack. I also happen to be a big fan of word games (Wordle anyone?) and am almost always feeling a little Scrabulous. That's why I happen to love this first game date - A Little Wordy.

A Little Wordy is a 2 player only game published by Exploding Kittens in which players take random letter tiles from bags and use them to create their own which they write on their secret board. After both players choose their words, the game begins. You and your opponent switch letter tiles (so you know what your working with) and helpful power cards are randomized and layed out on the table. You can use these cards which help you guess your opponents word by allowing you to eliminate letters, guess vowels, and know how long their word is. Using help will allow your opponent to collect berries, but incorrectly guessing their word will also allow them to collect berries, so choose wisely.

Once someone has guessed the secret word, if they have the most berries, they win! If not, their opponent can keep guessing to try and get the correct answer, but as soon as they no longer have the most berries, if they haven't guessed the word they lose. It's a fun, light game that plays differently each time based on your creativity and existing word bank knowledge. Rounds generally take less than 10 minutes each, so we like to play a few times in a row if we're breaking this game out. It's great for an afternoon break or as a warm up to a heavier game.

For our lunch date, we paired this game with the lovely Nuts About Berries salad from Fav Family Recipes. The freshness of all the ingredients really gave this meal a wow factor that your typical side salad can tend to lack. To make it hearty enough for a stand-alone meal and to add some protein, we added some hard boiled eggs on the side.

Overall, this was a great date. We have enjoyed this game before, but pairing it with a nice salad for lunch made for an extremely pleasant, relaxing afternoon. The next time you're feeling "A Little Wordy", or just want a fresh nutricious salad for lunch, choose this date. Who knows, if you've got the time and are already in the bird mood, your partner may just agree to game of Wingspan...
